The 3 Best Portable Sewing Machines - VS Sewing Machines

When you want to make repairs on the go or continue working on your sewing projects while you travel, a portable sewing machine is a must-have tool to take with you. But what makes for a good one? The best portable sewing machines are user-friendly, compact, and lightweight enough to store in a bag or a small suitcase. Some even come with features like an automatic needle threader and built-in LED lights to help make sewing more convenient when you're away from home.
To start, you should know that portable sewing machines range from around 3 pounds in weight to nearly 15. This may go without saying, but lighter machines have more basic designs when compared to their heavier counterparts. Usually, you can follow this general rule: The smaller machine is, the fewer stitch options you'll have.
If you have the need for any extra features (a built-in LED light is great for poorly lit rooms, for example), look out for those when making your decision. Also pay mind to the number of sewing feet each machine has, especially if you're used to working with a more versatile full-sized machine or have difficult projects in mind. http://www.vssewingmachine.com/sewing-machine-showroom-perambur/
With that in mind, take a look, below, at three of the best portable sewing machines on the market.

1. The Best Overall: Brother XM2701 Lightweight Sewing Machine

Brother XM2701 Lightweight Sewing Machine
  • Weight: 12.6 pounds
Although it's certainly not the smallest portable sewing machine out there, this Brother XM2701 lightweight sewing machine offers the best value and greatest number of features while still clocking in at a manageable 12.6 pounds. It boasts an impressive 27 built-in stitches and six different sewing feet, along with other user-friendly features like an automatic needle threader, top drop-in bobbin for even stitching, and LED lights to keep your workspace bright. No matter your skill level, this sewing machine will allow you to tackle any sewing project no matter where you are.
What fans say: "I wanted a decent, yet inexpensive, sewing machine to fix occasional things. I was really impressed. Instructions are very clear. I see no reason why even a professional wouldn't like this machine as it is quite portable."

2. The Best for Beginners: SINGER Start 1304 Sewing Machine

SINGER Start 1304 Sewing Machine
  • Weight: 11.5 pounds
Designed with beginning sewers in mind, this SINGER Start 1304 sewing machine is a great choice that weighs just under 12 pounds. It offers three different presser feet and six basic stitches (including zigzag, straight, and scallop stitches), all of which you can easily select with the turn of a dial. In addition, this sewing machine boasts a threading system that's printed right on the machine and preset stitch length and width to make getting started on a sewing project as easy and quick as possible.
What fans say: "It is a very light machine with a convenient handle that makes it easy to move. The stringing of thread is 'normal' and easy, and operation is intuitive. The drawer for your bobbin and extra needles is also convenient."

3. The Smallest: Varmax Mini Sewing Machine With Extension Table

Varmax Mini Sewing Machine With Extension Table
  • Weight: 2.8 pounds
For the most lightweight and affordably priced portable sewing machine out there, look no further than this Varmax mini sewing machine. At just 2.8 pounds, this plastic machine is small and easy to carry. Plus, it comes with an extension table to help stabilize sewing, as well as built-in lights, double-thread stitching, and two speed controls. However, since this machine does straight stitching only, it may be best suited to repairs and very basic sewing projects only. For a bit more functionality, you can upgrade to the brand's 6-pound model here.
What fans say: "This mini sewing machine is very easy to use. It’s great if you don’t have room or money for a big sewing machine but still need one. The little table that comes with it is really handy too. It can run on AA batteries or plug in the wall and it has the option of a foot pedal or automatic sewing with the press of a button. It was very easy to set up, it took less than 5 minutes. Very good product."

The best sewing machine for beginners - VS Sewing Machines

Usha sewing machine – VS

Budding fashion designer or crafty DIY'er? Once you enter the world of design, there's no looking back. Sewing machines for beginners are essential tools to let your creativity unfold.

These sewing machines are designed to take on a variety of projects given their unique assortment of features. Simply adjust stitch length, tension, or speed to suit your project and level of comfort. With most machines, you also receive attachments that make sewing thicker fabric easier, as well as those to create button holes. Don't worry about making mistakes in the beginning — after all, that's what the seam ripper is for.

Before you pick a fun project, make sure you take a look at our buying guide to choose the best sewing machine. We're including our top pick, Janome's Magnolia 7318, which is easy to learn on and, once you advance, there are plenty of fun features to explore.

Considerations when choosing sewing machines for beginners

Types of sewing machines

Mechanical sewing machines

With mechanical machines, you adjust settings with dials, knobs, or levers. Since their design is relatively simple, mechanical sewing machines tend to be less expensive than computerized ones. While they don't offer as many bells and whistles when it comes to stitch options, you can still do plenty of projects with them.

Computerized sewing machines

Computerized machines adjust settings with buttons and, in some machines, they're programmable. They offer five to 10 times as many stitches as mechanical machines — to mention just some of the bells and whistles. Computerized machines come with a bigger price tag, but it's worth considering as a versatile model for beginners as well as intermediate sewers.

Electric vs. battery

The majority of tabletop sewing machines are electric, so you have to set up near an outlet. For the most part, power cords on these are three feet long. Handheld and some mini tabletop machines are battery-powered. They're convenient for travel or use in a pinch, but battery drains quickly and they can't handle much beyond simple hems.

Features

Stitches

Sewing machines are equipped with between five and 150 stitch styles, depending on how advanced they are. Some are artistic, whereas others are functional and best-suited for sewing certain fabrics and textiles. You can also adjust the length and width of the stitches, which is really determined by the material.

Drop-in bobbin

The drop-in bobbin is located beneath the clear plate on the sewing machine. You're able to view the bobbin at all times, which means you can catch any issues like loose bobbins or rogue threads before they become difficult to manage.

Automatic threader

The automatic threader feature lets the needle drop into the bobbin for threading. Once you've threaded (which takes no more than a second or two), you're ready to sew. This feature is helpful for beginners so they're able to get past setup more quickly and dive into projects.

Speed control

The speed of a sewing machine is controlled by a foot pedal — the more you press down, the faster it goes. Seasoned sewers are more comfortable at fast speeds, where beginners take it slow to get their bearings. When it comes to intricate stitches or designs, all sewers slow down a little bit for the sake of precision.

Tension adjustment

This feature controls how tight thread is pulled as it feeds through the needle. You need to adjust it for every project, so definitely take time familiarizing yourself with it. Fabric, thread, and stitch type all play a role in tension selection.

Price

Handheld and mini sewing machines cost less than $50 but can't handle thick fabric or major projects. Mid-range machines cost between $50 and $150, and these are equipped with a decent stitch selection, automatic threader, and a few bells and whistles. For more advanced machines, computerized models with an impressive feature assortment cost up to $300.

FAQ

Q. Will my sewing machine come with any accessories out of the box?

A. Yes, you usually receive mini tools, notions, and bobbins, some of which are already threaded. Some machines also come with full-size thread, project books, or additional presser feet.

Q. I'm really struggling with setting up my sewing machine. What can I do?

A. A good place to start is watching tutorial videos by your machine's manufacturer. You can also enroll in a beginner sewing course. If you're an auditory learner, call the manufacturer and ask a customer service agent to walk you through threading the bobbin.

Sewing machines for beginners we recommend

Best of the best: Janome's Magnolia 7318 Sewing Machine

Our take: Nifty beginner machine with clear dials and adjustments from a reputable brand.

What we like: Easy to operate. Includes additional feet to accommodate thick or layered fabric. Decent weight and stays put during use.

What we dislike: Can handle a fair amount of thick layers, but not ideal for stacked material.

Best bang for your buck: Singer's 1304 Start Free-Arm Sewing Machine for Beginners

Our take: Simple and straightforward machine from an industry leader. Affordable and will last for years.

What we like: Six basic stitches. Hassle-free, easy-to-read manual dials which receive high marks from true beginners.

What we dislike: Can be outgrown quickly if you're taking on larger projects. Threading isn't always easy.

Choice 3: Brother's CS-6000i 60-Stitch Computerized Sewing Machine

Our take: Computerized model boasts impressive stitch options. Excellent choice for beginners who want to uplevel their skill set.

Sewing specialty shop owner ready to retire after 40 years - VS Sewing Machines

VS Sewing Machines- Usha memory craft 450e price in chennai

Linda Tromblay, owner of The Sewing & Yarn Shop, 118 N. Main St., has offered her sewing expertise and specialty products in a retail setting for four decades and has served in her downtown Bellefontaine location for more than 27 years. She is now ready for retirement and has announced that her store is closing at the end of the year.
Her professional sewing started 60 years ago when she had a sewing shop in her home.
Mrs. Tromblay’s late husband, Jim, who passed away in January, was in the U.S. Air Force, so the family moved often. In 1967, they settled in Bellefontaine when he was transferred to the 664th Air Command & Warning Squadron
They have lived in Logan County for 52 years and raised eight children.
For 30 years, Mrs. Tromblay sold Viking sewing machines and sergers, fabric, yarn, patterns and supplies, taught machine and sewing classes, and did custom sewing and alterations, all in her shop at home. http://www.vssewingmachine.com/sewing-machine-showroom-perambur/
Mr. Tromblay stayed at the house, doing machine repairs in his service area.
The Sewing & Yarn Shop has been an evolving business over the years. The owner has sold high-end sewing machines for many years, and her husband assisted with the repair side of the operations.
However, eventually Mrs. Tromblay chose to close the Viking dealership about 10 years ago, allowing Mr. Tromblay to retire. Since then, she has concentrated on alterations and yarn, as well as teaching classes and workshops educating individuals on how to sew and more.
All of her merchandise is currently on sale for 25 percent to 50 percent off. The owner related that everything must go, from cabinets to closets, metal and wood shelving, yarn crates, tables, counters, sewing machine cabinets, pattern cabinets, DMC floss boxes, window decorations and display items.
After many years in business, Mrs. Tromblay decided that this is the perfect time to retire and to focus on completing renovations to the house that she and her husband purchased 50 years ago.
The 118 N. Main St. space will be available for lease starting Jan. 1. This commercial retail/office space is 1,300 square feet and has a back entrance and tenant parking space.
